How do students learn to be effective problem solvers? In this session, you'll first learn about ineffective word-problem strategies, such as key words or describing problems by operation. Then, we'll focus on evidence-based strategies -teaching students an attack strategy and helping students understand the structure of word problems. Come ready to do some problem solving!

Sarah R. Powell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She conducts research and teacher training about effective mathematics interventions, especially as it relates to word-problem solving.
